Papers (1797, 1859-1994 and undated), collected by Jennie Clarkson Dreher Evins consist of manuscripts, bound volumes, pamphlets, and photographs . Speeches given in Columbia (S.C.), Gainesville, (Flor.), and Wilmington (N.C.), reflect Dreher's interest in the preservation of historic buildings and gardens, the Robert Mills House and the Boyleston Gardens being two examples. Includes essays by Chapman James Milling (filed in Plb), re immigration of French-speaking settlers (Huguenots, Acadians, refugees from Saint-Domingue / Santo Domingo) during Colonial and Early National periods, and another essay [ca. 1950?] discussing publications directed at the African American market, "The Contemporary Negro Magazine," re latest issue of "Negro Digest." Published materials include 95 pamphlets produced by various organizations: the Historical Commission of South Carolina, 1898-1947; promotional material for Chicora College, 1916; and yearbooks of the American Legion Auxiliary to Richland Post no. 6, 1924-1931 reinforce her interest in history. Articles about her work in the community appeared in "The State," "Newsweek," and the "Columbia Mirror"; 95 pamphlets and bound volumes including the American Legion Auxiliary to Richland Post no. 6 (yearbooks, 1925/26-1930/31); the SC Department of the American Legion Auxiliary yearbooks (1925/26-1930/31); Report of the Historical Commission of the State of SC (1898-1947); Bulletins of the Historical Commission of SC (1915-1932), and ledgers of the Columbia Stage Company, 1924-1949. Bound volumes were cash books or business ledgers, some of which record store accounts or purchases of cotton; several of these volumes were repurposed as scrapbooks with news articles pasted over ledger entries. Scrapbook, 1925-1929, details the efforts of the American Legion Auxiliary to save the Woodrow Wilson House. Dreher received this volume from Mrs. Henry Cappelmann [Ruth E Capplemann?]. Ledgers belonging to the Columbia Stage Company contain lists of stockholders and include correspondence related to sales of cotton and operation of textile mills. An audio cassette of the 1978 Ambassador's Breakfast and a sound/slide presentation of the 1978 Ambassador of the Year sponsored by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce are included with the papers. Jennie Clarkson Dreher was the first woman ever to be so honored by the group. An oversize folder contains a United Daughters of the Confederacy membership, n.d., two Orders of the Palmetto, 1979 and 1994, Advisory Committee on the Arts membership, 1979 and photocopied legal documents: a petition of the German Protestant Church Zion on Saludy River, 1797 and a petition, undated, signed by women of Lexington District re sale of intoxicating liquors and consumption of the same at the place of purchase.
